George Kalandia, is a Doctor of Historical Science and the General Director of the Art Palace of Georgia. He has authored numerous popular Georgian TV programs, and since 2010, has been a professor at the Davit Aghmashenebeli University of Georgia. In 2012, at the same university, he became an honourable Doctor. In 2007, he graduated from the Political School of the European Union (Strasburg) and in 2011, the ECM College Dublin of Oxford University (English Language Course).
In 2004-2011, several scientific expeditions were organized by Kalandia in Turkey, India, Egypt, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Portugal and England, which aimed to explore the traditions, folklore and artefacts of Georgians (“chveneburebi”) living abroad. During the expedition, tens of Georgian villages, folklore samples and historical monuments were recorded for the national archive.
In 2015-2016, in the National Library of Ireland, George Kalandia explored unknown historical sources about renowned Georgian king Heraclius II. The scientific work titled “Prince Heraclius in British and Irish Press” was published in 2017. Kalandia has dedicated many works to Georgian-European relations, among them the notable “Italy in Georgia, Millennial Dialogue” (2011), “Shakespeare in Georgian Painting”(2013), “Shakespeare in Georgian Theatre” (2013), “Wardrops and Georgia” (2014), “Georgians in World War I” (2014), “German Painters and the Caucasus” (2015), and “Shakespeare in Georgian Theatre” (2016).
In 2006, George Kalandia dedicated a monography to the architectural ensembles of the Dadiani palaces in Zugdidi, Gordi and Salkhino. He studied the history of construction of the palaces, the palace court system of Mengrelian noblemen, and peripeteias of the establishment of the Historcal Museum in Zugdidi. He was the first to have studied and published the biography of Georgian public figure Ahmed Melashvili in the book “Chveneburta Beladi” (Our Leader).
The research project “Textile from Georgia”, implemented in 2017 under the leadership of George Kalandia, won the European Union Prize for Culture Heritage with the top “Europa Nostra” award.
From 2018, George Kalandia is leading the scientific project “Unknown Historical Sources about Georgia (Archive of the Tudors)” financed by Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia.
